The Electrical Engineer - Wood River Refinery is a sole contributor that works closely with multi-discipline teams on multiple projects. They are a proven problem solver that provides technical expertise, engineering design services, project prioritization and support to production units in a large refinery, laboratories, shops, and office buildings. The electrical engineer works with maintenance and construction supervisors and electricians to safely install, operate, and maintain electrical power distribution systems.
Responsibilities May Include
Directing and advising the application of company standards in electrical design, equipment specifications, construction and equipment commissioning
Providing technical support to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the refinery electrical distribution and utilization systems
Conducting system analysis studies (load flow, voltage drop, short circuit, relay coordination, motor starting, arc flash) and work to correct deficiencies using the latest version of SKM Power Tools electrical engineering analysis software
Overseeing application and interpretation of National Electric Code and other applicable codes and standards (e.g., NFPA 70E, applicable sections of OSHA 1910, API, and IEEE)
Performing electrical engineering calculations as required for design work and checking the work of designers
Managing protective relays settings and making recommendations to improve reliability
Reviewing equipment specifications and drawings for projects pertaining to equipment location, single line, area classification, and schematic drawing
Recommending vendors for purchase of equipment and providing technical review of bids
Contributing to cost estimates for projects and major maintenance
Participating in long-range planning for maintenance and equipment replacement
Managing power requirements and coordinating with other projects in progress
Consulting on electrical system expansion to provide capacity, growth, reliability, maintainability, and expandability, which will include interfacing with the electric utility provider
Overseeing adherence to city and county regulations including special equipment approvals (UL) and building permits
Active participation in technical networks; developing/implementing best practices
Train personnel on electrical safety, operating and maintaining electrical equipment, and engineering best practices
Lead or participate in root cause analysis of equipment failures and incident investigations
Develop and maintain electrical safe work practices, electrical procedures, and electrical engineering standards and specifications
Perform audits on people, equipment, and systems for compliance to policies and procedures
Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
Valid driver’s license
3 or more years of direct electrical engineering design, electrical maintenance, and/or electrical operations experience in the petrochemical industry or similar large facilities
5 or more years of direct electrical engineering design, electrical maintenance, and/or electrical operations experience in the petrochemical industry or similar large facilities
Licensed professional engineer
3 or more years of experience in power distributions systems for voltage levels up to 34.5 kV
Direct experience with petrochemical processing and/or Process Safety Management (PSM) facilities
The Wood River Refinery is located in Roxana, Illinois, about 15 miles northeast of St. Louis, Missouri, at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes a mixture of light, low-sulfur; heavy, high sulfur; and high-acid crude oil. The crude supply is sourced domestically or from Canada. Wood River produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include petrochemical feedstocks, asphalt and petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed to customers by pipeline, rail car, barge and truck and are shipped to markets throughout the Midcontinent region.
