The Non-Journeyman Instrument Mechanic / Analyzer Technician is responsible for inspecting, troubleshooting, servicing, and repairing refinery instrumentation, process stream analyzers, combustion controls, and continuous emissions monitors, both in the shop and in the field. All work must be performed in a safe and efficient manner under the general direction of the Instrumentation Supervisor.
The Non-Journeyman Instrument Mechanic / Analyzer Technician is expected to remove equipment if necessary, calibrate, install, service, modify, test, and/or replace a wide variety of pneumatic, fluidic, mechanical, electrical, and electronic devices. All tools and equipment used are expected to be well-kept and orderly to facilitate a safe and efficient work environment. Job requires work both indoors and outdoors, lifting, and climbing. Occasionally may be required to work at elevated heights and/or confined space. Shift work, including days, nights, weekends and holidays may be required; must be willing and able to respond to callouts during off hours due to business necessity.
Responsibilities may include:
- Troubleshooting instrumentation issues using schematics and vendor drawings
- Working with Process Control team to repair complex instrumentation and computer control systems
- Performing calibrations, programming and repairs on electronic, pneumatic, and electro-pneumatic equipment and parts associated with this equipment
- Examining color-coded resistors and wiring, wiring within Safety Instrumented Systems and control circuits, and circuit boards for defects in operation
- Working with Environmental Department to understand and comply with regulatory requirements
- Completing safety observations and stopping unsafe work immediately
- Communicating effectively with Supervisors, Operations and other Maintenance Craft
- Ensuring all work is completed in a safe, environmentally-compliant, and cost effective manner
- Initiating equipment defect elimination by identifying potential problems, taking immediate corrective action when practical, and recommending solutions to supervisors and engineers
- Reviewing drawings, procedures, and specifications to effectively perform assigned work
- Sharing knowledge, skills and expertise to facilitate a high performing organization
- Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
- High School diploma and or G.E.D. equivalent
- Must understand the basics of both AC and DC theory, electronics, and circuits
- Demonstrate an understanding of instrument loop diagrams
- 18 years of age or older
- Maintain a valid driver's license
- Must possess a valid Transportation Workers' Identification Credential (TWIC) or qualify for a TWIC card by start date
- Must be willing and able, with or without accommodation, to perform/comply with the following:
Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment
Maintain face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly
Work overtime (including weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts) and respond to after-hours callouts on an as needed
Climb, bend, lift, and perform a wide variety of physical activities
Work in enclosed spaces such as tanks and process equipment
Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines
Work around chemicals, including acids and bases
Work outside in any given weather conditions
- 1 or more years of instrumentation experience in refineries and/or chemical plants or relevant military experience in large industrial systems
- Certifications (examples: NCCER or equivalent, SCBA, etc.)
- Completion of an apprenticeship, formal training or trade program, or Associates Degree in a technical field, prior to start date
- Ability to diagnose equipment malfunctions, identify corrective action, and analyze/document complex inspection and repair information
- Experience with Safety Instrumented Systems
- Experience calibrating valves, transmitters, and analyzers
- Experience with refinery maintenance, turnaround, and/or shutdown work
- Experience with Lock Out Tag Out
- Proficient with Microsoft applications and SAP
- Military training/experience
