The Maintenance Mechanic - Electrician is responsible for maintaining the refinery’s electrical facilities (high and low voltage), communication and alarm systems. The Electrician is responsible for inspecting, troubleshooting, servicing, and repairing a wide variety of electrical equipment including, but not limited to, motors, motor controllers and starters, variable frequency drives, switchgear, electrical test equipment, and electrical control systems. The Electrician repairs, maintains, and installs electrical systems and equipment following all safety procedures, electrical codes, manuals, schematic drawings, diagrams, and blueprints. Uses test equipment, measuring, and alignment tools to perform assigned work tasks. The Electrician must demonstrate knowledge of basic grounding, electricity, and electrical wiring and raceway systems.

Responsibilities May Include

  • Troubleshooting electrical systems using ladder logic, electrical prints and/or schematics, knowledge of 3-phase electrical systems of 208Y/120V, 480Y/277V, 2400V, 4160V, and up to 34.5kV

  • Performing repair work on electric motors, motor control centers, switchgear, motor drives, UPS systems, critical battery systems, complex shutdown systems substation maintenance, substation breaker maintenance, testing batteries, testing control circuits, testing breaker control schemes and other associated equipment

  • Applying knowledge of NFPA 70 National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA 70E Electrical Safe Work Practices, applicable government and plan standards/regulations (OSHA, ANSI), and lock out/tag out procedures (LOTO)

  • Completing general repairs and planned preventative maintenance on all types of electrical equipment

  • Utilizing common hand tools, meters, test equipment (like multimeter, megger) and other associated test and measurement equipment

  • Reading and interpreting manuals, standards, schematics, wiring diagrams and federal, state and local codes and regulations

  • Completing safety observations and stopping unsafe work immediately

  • Demonstrating the ability to work alone or in a team and demonstrating techniques to apprentices and occasionally assisting other trades and contractors when required

  • Communicating effectively with Supervisors, Operations and other Maintenance Craft

  • Ensuring all work is completed in a safe, environmentally-compliant, and cost effective manner

  • Initiating equipment defect elimination by identifying potential problems, taking immediate corrective action when practical, and recommending solutions to supervisors and engineers.

  • Reviewing drawings, procedures, and specifications to effectively perform assigned work

  • Sharing knowledge, skills, and expertise to facilitate a high performing organization

Position Requirements


  • Legally authorized to work in job posting country

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalent

  • 5 or more years of electrical systems experience

  • 18 years of age or older

  • Maintain a valid driver's license

  • Experience in reading and understanding electrical single-line diagrams, schematics and wiring diagrams

  • Willing and able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC). Information can be found at

  • Must be willing and able, with or without accommodation, to perform/comply with the following:

  • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment

  • Maintain face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly

  • Work overtime (including weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts) and respond to after-hours callouts

  • Climb, bend, lift, and perform a wide variety of physical activities

  • Work at elevated heights

  • Work in enclosed spaces such as MCC or switchgear buildings

  • Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines

  • Work around chemicals, including acids and bases

  • Work outside in given weather condition


  • 5 or more years of electrical systems experience in refineries and/or chemical plants or relevant military experience in large industrial systems

  • Certifications (examples: NCCER or equivalent, SCBA, etc.)

  • Completion of an apprenticeship, formal training or trade program, or Associates Degree in technical field

  • California State Journey Electrician License

  • Ability to diagnose equipment malfunctions, identify corrective action, and analyze/document complex inspection and repair information

  • Experience with refinery maintenance, turnaround, and/or shutdown work

  • Experience with high voltage

  • Experience with Lock Out Tag Out

  • Proficient with Microsoft and SAP

  • Military training/experience

The Los Angeles Refinery consists of two linked facilities located five miles apart in Carson and Wilmington, California. The Carson facility processes crude oil, and the Wilmington facility upgrades the intermediate products to finished products. The facilities include crude distillation, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrocracking and delayed coking units. The refinery processes mainly heavy, high-sulfur crude oil. It receives domestic crude oil by pipeline from California, Canadian crude via rail, and both foreign and domestic crude oil by tanker through a third-party terminal in the Port of Long Beach. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. The refinery produces CARB-grade gasoline. Other products include petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed to California, Nevada and Arizona by pipeline and truck.
