The Maintenance Mechanic - Layout Pipefitter, Los Angeles Refinery is responsible for various activities both in the shop and in the field. The Layout Pipefitter should be knowledgeable and proficient measuring and sketching piping circuits.
Responsibilities May Include:
Planning work and interpreting drawings, sketches, job orders and other instructions
Taking measurements in the field, drawing and interpreting isometric drawings
Fabricating and installing components
Moving materials, tools, equipment and sub-assemblies using trucks, forklift, carts, dollies, etc.
Completing safety observations and stopping any unsafe work immediately
Demonstrating the ability to work alone or in a team and demonstrating techniques to apprentices and occasionally assisting other trades and contractors when required
Communicating effectively with Supervisors, Operations and other Maintenance craft
Ensuring all work is completed in a safe, environmentally-compliant, and cost effective manner
Initiating equipment defect elimination by identifying potential problems, taking immediate corrective action when practical, and recommending solutions to supervisors and engineers
Reviewing drawings, procedures, and specifications to effectively perform assigned work
Creating bill of materials (BOM) utilizing provided piping line specifications
Sharing knowledge, skills, and expertise to facilitate a high performing organization
Required Qualifications:
Legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions
High School Diploma or equivalent
18 years of age or older
Maintain a valid driver's license
5 or more years of layout experience (pipe setup and layout, cutting, grinding, weld preparation)
Currently hold or be able to qualify to receive a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card prior to employment start date. Note: information regarding TWIC qualification standards may be found at https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic
Must be willing and able, with or without accommodation, to perform/comply with the following:
Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment
Maintain face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly
Work overtime (including weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts) and respond to after-hours callouts on an as needed
Climb, bend, lift, and perform a wide variety of physical activities
Work in enclosed spaces such as tanks and process equipment
Work at elevated heights
Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines
Work around chemicals, including acids and bases
Work outside in any given weather conditions
Preferred Qualifications:
10 or more years of layout experience (pipe setup and layout, cutting, grinding, weld preparation) in refineries and/or chemical plants or relevant military experience in large industrial systems
Experience with taking measurements, drawing and interpreting isometric drawings
Experience operating shop equipment, including but not limited to, cut-off saw and pipe machine
Experience operating forklifts, man lifts, and overhead cranes
Familiarity with piping fabrication fit-up tolerances
Possess basic rigging skills
Ability to assist and become proficient in both pipefitting and boiler making crafts
Completion of an apprenticeship, formal training or trade program, or Associates Degree
Experience in Class A or Class B suits
Experience with Emergency Response Team
Experience with Lock Out Tag Out procedures
Experience with Positive Material Identification (PMI)
Proficient with Microsoft applications and SAP
Military training/experience
Experience with refinery maintenance, turnaround, and/or shutdown work
The Los Angeles Refinery consists of two linked facilities located five miles apart in Carson and Wilmington, California. The Carson facility processes crude oil, and the Wilmington facility upgrades the intermediate products to finished products. The facilities include crude distillation, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrocracking and delayed coking units. The refinery processes mainly heavy, high-sulfur crude oil. It receives domestic crude oil by pipeline from California, Canadian crude via rail, and both foreign and domestic crude oil by tanker through a third-party terminal in the Port of Long Beach. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. The refinery produces CARB-grade gasoline. Other products include petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed to California, Nevada and Arizona by pipeline and truck.
