Mechanical Engineers provide technical support to operations and maintenance in designing, maintaining and operating equipment and facilities in a safe and environmentally responsible manner. This position is responsible for monitoring equipment and processes to ensure the reliable and efficient operation of the facility as well as designing, engineering and overseeing the installation of projects in accordance with code, regulatory and company standards.

Responsibilities may include :

  • Providing technical support to operations to ensure the safe continued running of the facility.
  • Monitoring and evaluating equipment performance and recommending operational or equipment improvements.
  • Troubleshooting equipment/operational problems and implementing solutions.
  • Reviewing equipment performance to ensure suitability and recommend improvements
  • Managing numerous (>20) projects/activities, meeting all deadlines
  • Developing all mechanical design work for minor to intermediate size projects
  • Developing cost estimates and business justification for improvement projects as well as their own recommendations
  • Specifying, procuring and installing replacement piping, pumps, instrumentation, mechanical parts, etc.
  • Reviewing proposed mechanical designs, by others, to ensure adequacy and code/company standard compliance
  • Leading/participating in failure analysis of equipment
  • Developing work scope for turnaround activities with operations and maintenance.
  • Providing oversight to construction and turnaround activities
  • Ensuring repairs and changes are in accordance with MOC and MI processes
  • Ensuring continuous professional development as well as assisting with developing other engineers


Basic/Required :

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
  • Must be able to read/interpret technical materials/drawings in English
  • Must be able and willing, with or without reasonable accommodation to perform/comply with all of the following:
  • Work in enclosed/confined spaces
  • Work safety near large, hot, high-speed machinery
  • Climb and work safety at elevated heights
  • Work around chemicals, acids, and bases
  • Work with/around hydrocarbons under high pressure and/or heat
  • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment such as steel-toed shoes, ear/eye protection, hard hat, etc.
  • Be clean shaven of facial hair each day (to ensure proper respirator utilization)
  • Work in/outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
  • Must be willing and able to work extended hours (as needed) including weekends, holidays, and on shift.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite including Word, Excel, Outlook and Powerpoint
  • Currently hold or have the ability to qualify to receive a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card. Note, information regarding TWIC qualification standards may be found at

Preferred :

  • 5 or more years of experience working in the engineering field with familiarity with established regulations and practices
  • 5 or more years of experience in a refinery/petrochemical/industrial operating environment
  • 1 or more years of previous turnaround experience
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting skills/experience in the identification and resolution of equipment problems.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills
  • Demonstrated ability to secure technical information from vendors and other company resources
  • Possess demonstrated abilities in self-motivation and problem-solving
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communications skills
  • Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently or as an effective team member
  • SAP experience

The San Francisco Refinery is comprised of two facilities linked by a 200-mile pipeline. The Rodeo facility is located in the San Francisco Bay area, while the Santa Maria facility is located in Arroyo Grande, CA. The refinery's crude oil processing capacity is 120 MBD. The refinery processes mainly heavy, high-sulfur crude oil.
