Description

The Process Control Systems Engineer maintains and upgrades the process control system asset base for the Refinery. Implements best practices in the selection, maintenance and troubleshooting of process control system asset base to ensure that safety, regulatory, production, and optimization objectives are met. Works effectively with other Ponca City Refinery control systems personnel to assure consistency and best practice implementation. The process control system asset base includes all Distributed Control System (DCS) and process control network (PCN).

Responsibilities May Include

  • Provide process control system engineering services to troubleshoot, analyze and provide direction to safely resolve control system problems within assigned production area of a complex refinery.

  • Design, specify, implement and maintain Honeywell distributed control and process control hardware. Includes implementation of new releases (on/off process migrations) and upgrades.

  • Alarm system ownership and management for the refinery including software implementation and work processes.

  • Responsible for the development, implementation and management of process control system safe work practices, maintenance procedures, testing procedures, preventive maintenance plans and engineering standards and specifications.

  • Provide support and expertise for design, specification, and troubleshooting of regulatory control, advanced regulatory control, and graphics work on the process control system.

  • Maintain and troubleshoot OPC communications between nodes and devices on the system.

  • Assist the maintenance work process to provide technical guidance and documentation based on priority process control work.

  • Operations Support – Work closely with Operations Department to ensure reliability of process operation and control through daily monitoring of systems performance.

  • Ownership of the system documentation, controls, alarms, training, interfaces, and policies.

  • Responsible for the development, implementation and coordination of process control system reliability improvement efforts, processes and systems, such as: Defect elimination, Predictive/Preventive Maintenance Plans, Criticality Analysis, Server and associated metrics.

  • Assist in the development of process control system turnaround work lists.

  • Provide expertise and support to Controls Modernization and Automation Projects involving process control system specification, hardware and software design, testing, graphics, commissioning, start-up and documentation.

  • Configure and troubleshoot Refinery product blending systems and product blending control applications. Troubleshoot and upgrade analyzer correlations to optimize gasoline blends. Support Operations and Refinery Planning to achieve product blending goals.

  • Provide input and assistance to small and large capital projects from conception to commissioning for process control system design and analysis. Reviewing process control designs to develop the most optimal, reliable, and cost-effective control system.

  • Assist with training and development of operators, technicians, and engineers in order to improve skill sets with respect to process control, controls systems, and alarm management.

  • Complete/assist in the MOC and change management work processes for the control system.

Position Requirements

Basic/Required:

  • Legally authorized to work in the posting country

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering

  • Valid driver’s license

  • 5 or more years of experience working in a refinery or petrochemical facility

  • 5 or more years of Process Control System experience

  • Installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting experience of process control systems and equipment in a refinery/petrochemical facility

  • Honeywell Distributed Control System (DCS) programming, troubleshooting, and maintenance experience primarily for the Experion and TDC3000 platforms

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Chemical Engineering

  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to establish/maintain priorities

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, ability to interact with multiple layers of organizations

  • Prior supervisory/leadership experience

  • Proficient with Excel, Word, DCS, PI and SAP

  • Knowledge and experience with acceptance testing and commissioning of process control equipment and systems

  • Experience with Honeywell Fail Safe Controller (FSC) and Safety Manager (SM)

  • Understanding of field instrumentation hardware installation, design, troubleshooting and maintenance

  • Experience with Smart Plant Instrumentation (SPI)

  • Possess a strong desire to learn, strengthen and build skills, and keep up with process control system technology and industry standards and codes

The Ponca City Refinery is located in Ponca City, Oklahoma, approximately 95 miles northwest of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Its facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes a mixture of light, medium and heavy crude oil delivered via pipeline from Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, the U.S. Rockies and Canada. Infrastructure improvements have enabled the delivery of locally produced crude oil by pipeline and truck. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels and anode-grade petroleum coke. Refined products are primarily distributed to customers by company-owned and common carrier pipelines to markets throughout the Midcontinent region.
