Description

The primary responsibility of the Corrosion and Materials Engineer is to ensure fixed equipment mechanical integrity, i.e., reliability and availability, avoid leaks, failures and process safety events. Basic activities to support this effort include monitoring and responding to refinery operational conditions, implementing and supporting Inspection Department initiatives and providing technical input for Maintenance Department and Project Engineering objectives.

Responsibilities May Include

  • Participating in and promoting all aspects of the refinery safety program. Visibly demonstrating commitment to workplace safety of employees and contractors through personal engagement, direct communication and by setting a good example.

  • Resolving problems involving corrosion or other forms of deterioration; providing recommendations for repairs, changes, replacements.

  • Performing and/or coordinating failure analysis, metallographic analysis, specialized inspections and determining the need for and contracts outside services of contractors.

  • Performing and/or coordinating fitness-for-service evaluations and risk-based inspection activities.

  • Reviewing activities and results of on-site corrosion control chemical vendor.

  • Reviewing changes in unit operations impacting mechanical integrity with Operations and Inspection personnel.

  • Providing oversight and management of Cathodic Protection system and Soil Resistivity testing.

  • Providing technical reviews and input regarding temperatures, pressures and corrosion rates to Management of Change system.

  • Functioning as the refinery SME for feed stock change MOCs regarding potential impact to corrosion and equipment reliability.

  • Providing submittals, where applicable, for inspection-related refinery expense and capital budgets.

  • Can perform design, review and/or coordinate approval of on-stream repairs for refinery fixed equipment and piping along with Fixed Equipment Engineers.

  • Participating in developing complex welding procedures such as dissimilar materials or on-stream welds.

  • Providing leadership in progressing work and verifying compliance with company mechanical integrity standards such as:

° Sulfidation service equipment (process conditions vs. metallurgy).

° Atmospheric Overhead Required Standard

° Damage Mechanism Reviews and equipment specific inspection planning.

° Systemization and Circuitization

° Injection and mix point design and operation

  • Functioning as the Refinery Committee Representative for corporate Engineering Specifications and review and approval of related deviation requests.

  • Functioning as a representative in establishing and monitoring mechanical integrity related ROL’s.

  • Performing reviews of Project Engineering design packages for proper material selection, temperature and pressures of fixed equipment items.

  • Developing/presenting/sponsoring personnel training for M.I. subjects.

  • Working knowledge, applying and understanding pertinent industry Codes and Standards, especially NBIC, ASME and API Codes and Standards (e.g. ASME B31.3, 16.5, 31.1, API 510, 570, 653).

Position Requirements

Basic/Required:

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering

  • Valid Driver’s License

  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office

  • Willing and able to perform and comply with the following:

° Travel up to 5% of the time

° Work extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends and holidays and be on call

° Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines

° Climb ladders and stairs up to 200 feet in height

° Transport articles up to 50 pounds

° Work around chemicals, including acids and bases

° Work around hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat

° Work outside in harsh weather conditions

° Wear fire-retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection)

° Maintain face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials, Metallurgical or Corrosion Engineering

  • 1 or more years of experience in the oil and gas industry

  • 1 or more years of experience with the fundamentals of corrosion and methods of corrosion control

  • Current API/ASME/AWS certifications

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations

  • Ability to write technical reports and effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers and general plant personnel

  • Proficient in Equity Engineering Plant Manager, RBI and PCMS software packages

  • Proficient with API 530 and performing heater remaining tube life calculations

  • Proficient with API and capable of performing a variety of Level 1 and 2 Fitness for Service

The Ponca City Refinery is located in Ponca City, Oklahoma, approximately 95 miles northwest of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Its facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes a mixture of light, medium and heavy crude oil delivered via pipeline from Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, the U.S. Rockies and Canada. Infrastructure improvements have enabled the delivery of locally produced crude oil by pipeline and truck. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels and anode-grade petroleum coke. Refined products are primarily distributed to customers by company-owned and common carrier pipelines to markets throughout the Midcontinent region.
