As the Process Engineering Design Leader at the Humber Refinery, you will be expected to combine your excellent technical and leadership skills with a well-developed practical awareness to contribute to the success of the business. Primary responsibilities will include managing and approving all process engineering design work associated with the refinery’s capital projects, as well as providing technical support to refinery operations. The primary focus is on inherently safe process engineering design, long term reliability and project efficiency.

Responsibilities May Include

The Process Engineer Design Leader is responsible for:

  • Strong, demonstrable SHE and process safety leadership both in the design office and on the refinery

  • Managing a team of engineers to deliver approved process designs that meet project schedules and milestones

  • Ensuring the process designs do not introduce any adverse process safety or environmental impacts

  • Evaluating project proposals to ensure a proportionate and cost-effective solution is implemented

  • Ensuring the refinery relief system assessments and flare models are maintained and updated

  • Contributing towards identifying and developing new projects and long-term strategies to maintain refinery growth

  • Managing process engineering design PHA (Hazop) action items to ensure timely completion

  • Maintaining process engineering design procedures in accordance with P66 Refining Engineering Practices and Standards

  • Providing resource support for process engineering troubleshooting in the refinery operations teams and supporting unit turnaround activity and start-ups

  • Assessing process engineering resource requirements and managing external contractor resource to supplement P66 engineers

  • Continuous coaching, development and performance management of the process engineers in the Process Engineering Design Group

Position Requirements

You are organised and self-motivated, with a good attention to detail and keen to deliver the best solution for the refinery.

You have a strong background in Oil & Gas or Petrochemical process engineering design and projects with the following qualifications and most of the experience:

The legal right to live and work in the UK on a permanent basis without restrictions.

  • Chemical Engineering discipline degree qualified (Minimum 2:1 classification)

  • Achieved Chartered Engineer status with the Institute of Chemical Engineers or equivalent

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Extensive experience in feasibility, concept selection and front-end engineering studies

  • Extensive experience performing, checking and approving standard process engineering calculations and developing technical reports

  • Project engineering skills to ensure studies and projects are delivered within agreed budgets and schedules

  • Understanding of relevant UK safety and environmental industry regulations

  • Knowledge of relevant UK and US industry codes and standards

  • Experience in leading a process engineering or project team and managing performance expectations.

The Humber Refinery is located on the east coast of England in North Lincolnshire, United Kingdom, approximately 180 miles north of London. Humber's facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, hydrodesulfurization, thermal cracking and delayed coking units. The refinery has two coking units with associated calcining plants, which produce high-value graphite and anode petroleum cokes. It processes crude oil supplied primarily from the North Sea and includes light, low- and medium-sulfur and acidic crude oil. Humber produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. It is the only coking refinery in the United Kingdom, and a major producer of specialty graphite cokes and anode coke. Approximately 70 percent of the light oils produced by the refinery are distributed to customers in the United Kingdom by pipeline, rail car and truck, while the other products are exported to the rest of Europe, West Africa and the United States.
