Phillips 66 Senior Corrosion Engineer in Houston, Texas

The Senior Corrosion Engineer provides corrosion control services with a primary focus on asset integrity while also maintaining compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements for Midstream assets. In addition, they will provide technical support for field-based corrosion control activities.

The primary focus for this position is Internal Corrosion Control . However, the successful candidate will also be required to provide backup support across all types of corrosion control activities.

Responsibilities May Include

A primary focus of the Sr Corrosion Engineer is to develop others and drive improvements and consistency at a program/organizational level.

  • Acting as primary contact for interpretation of standards and procedures related to internal corrosion control.

  • Developing, maintaining and providing technical support for the corrosion control policies, procedures, standards and specifications, including coatings. Assuring these documents keep abreast of changes in industry practices and regulations while providing technically competent and operationally feasible requirements.

  • Managing the internal corrosion monitoring program, currently consisting of company-wide coupons augmented with ER probe systems, with the goal of cost-effectively expanding the scope of the program.

  • Driving improvements in and expansion of product sampling and corrosion inhibition programs.

  • Auditing implementation of the MI-0520 Internal Corrosion Control Program across Midstream assets

  • Data integration with the purpose of driving Asset Integrity objectives focused on control and management of time-dependent integrity threats from:

  • Integrity data

  • External Corrosion Control Data

  • Internal Corrosion Control Data

  • Pipe/coatings and properties

  • Risk Data

  • Other data streams as needed

  • Using the integrated data to partner with field corrosion control personnel in the development and implementation of preventive and mitigative measures to address time dependent threats

  • Using the integrated data to partner with pipeline integrity personnel to assure that appropriate integrity assessments are planned

  • Providing technical support for the following:

  • Corrosion control specialists and team leads in the field

  • Facility Integrity group

  • Pipeline Integrity group with Integrity Assessments

  • IMP program.

  • Risk Program.

  • Projects

  • Coordinating Metallurgical/Failure Analysis investigations.

  • Providing technical support for the incident investigations. Lead investigations as needed.

  • Providing support for corrosion control projects initiated by the field corrosion control specialists; assist with budgeting and forecasting for both expense and capital projects

  • Providing project support for corrosion control related projects initiated by the Regions and the Major Projects group

  • Participating in industry committees such as PRCI, NACE, API, SSPC, etc.

  • Actively participating with teams in the corrosion function regarding best practices (Midstream, P66, and external)

  • Evaluating new technologies related to corrosion control.

  • Driving consistent corrosion control practices throughout Midstream

  • Coordinating specialized field inspections (NDE, corrosion evaluations, etc.)

  • Providing support for corporate or regulatory audits and technical expertise for development of any mitigative actions relative to audit findings.

  • Maintaining good working relationships with customers and address their needs in a timely, creative, and cost-effective manner

  • Championing safety and environmental values and awareness for the group

  • Developing own skill sets related to cathodic protection, internal corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, materials selection, coatings and linings, welding, NDE technologies.

  • Developing others through one-on-one interaction and development/presentation of training programs

  • Mentoring engineers with less experience to grow their knowledge base

Position Requirements


  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country

  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in an Engineering or Applied Science Discipline

  • 10 or more years of corrosion control related experience

  • 5 or more years of pipeline, oilfield, refining or chemical process industry experience in an Asset Integrity or Corrosion Control function

  • Intermediate level of proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook software


  • Advanced Degree in an Engineering or Applied Science Discipline (Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science preferred)

  • Demonstrated background in development and application of internal corrosion control methods

  • Current NACE, ASNT, or API Certifications; or Professional Engineering Registration

  • Knowledge of Corrosion Control Issues and Pipeline & Terminals Operations

  • 10 or more years of pipeline experience

  • Pipeline integrity experience

  • High Problem-Solving Ability

  • Knowledge of hazardous liquid and/or natural gas regulations (49 CFR Part 195 and/or 49 CFR Part 192)

  • Desire to develop others toward Technical Authority level skill set

  • Good communication skills across all levels of the organization (written and verbal)
