The Analyzer Lead is primarily accountable for establishing an analyzer technology strategy and providing expertise and direction to Phillips 66 refineries in the implementation of the strategy. To deliver upon the key objectives of this position it will require an individual who can lead through influence and effectively communicate with management, sites leads and corporate staffs. The position will also require an individual who is able to build and maintain strong relationships with vendors and business partners that provide technologies and support the analyzer technologies used in Refinery safety, environmental and operational applications. Located in Houston, Texas, this position reports to the Director Industrial Control Systems within the Refinery Business Improvement (RBI) organization.

Responsibilities may include :

  • Maintain a high level of technical and functional knowledge of analysis technologies used in refining applications
  • Stay current with Environmental regulatory requirements related to process analyzers
  • Develop and provide technical and strategic direction for Analytical initiatives in Refining
  • Assist sites with scoping, developing and approving Analyzer projects, including: specification, hardware, sample system design, testing, commissioning, start-up and documentation.
  • Identify Analyzer metrics and associated tools to drive measurable and sustainable improvement in the performance, management and support of Analyzers
  • Primary interface for Analyzer hardware and sample system vendors
  • Develop and lead auditing programs to drive functional excellence in Analyzers
  • Identify technologies and best practices to drive measurable and sustainable improvement in the application and support of process analytical equipment
  • Facilitate the identification, development and sharing of best practices for Analyzers among Refining through internal and external networking
  • Active with industry analytical standards development organizations
  • Owner/Developer of P66 analyzers REPs, Best Practices and Useful Practices
  • Develop guidance for analyzer replacement prioritization
  • Promote knowledge sharing across business units by hosting a monthly analyzer network conference call and coordinate logistics and content of periodic network Face to Face meetings
  • Develop Training Needs Analysis and Training Curriculum to improve skill-sets with respect to process Analytical equipment and techniques
  • Work with Optimization and Planning groups to identify opportunities for inferential properties to replace analyzers
  • Resource for Data Acquisition and Handling System direction and support
  • Primary contact for environmental groups for emissions testing or other regulatory issues affecting analyzers


Basic/Required :

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
  • Valid driver’s license
  • 15 or more years of experience with basic chromatography and physical property analyzers
  • 15 or more years of experience with sample conditioning principles and hardware
  • Ability to travel up to 30%

Preferred :

  • Extensive experience with on-line process analyzers in a refining environment
  • Understand SQC/SPC principles and how to apply them to process analyzers
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as work productively in a diverse team based environment
  • Strong computer skills, proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and SAP
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills – accurately and clearly communicate both technical and practical information
  • Comprehensive understanding of analyzer technologies, relevant standards, codes, and environmental regulations as they are applied to analyzers
  • Understand CFR 40 Part 60, 63 and Part 75 regulations and how they apply to refining environmental analyzers
  • Familiar with SPI/InTools
  • Experience with combustion analyzer technologies
  • Experience with major analyzer suppliers
  • Familiar with/promote Process Industry Practices Standards
