Description

The Laboratory Technician is expected to perform various chemical analyses in a quality control laboratory at the Phillips 66 Borger Refinery located in Borger, Texas. The starting rate of pay for a Laboratory Technician is $39.22/hour with the ability to reach top Laboratory Technician pay within 24 months which is currently $44.34/hour.

This position requires successful completion of aptitude and behavioral testing and an on-site interview. Candidates who receive an offer of employment will then be required to successfully complete a pre-employment due diligence process that consists of things like a background check, medical, hearing, respiratory, vision exams and agility testing.

Responsibilities May Include

  • Climbing stairs on storage tanks, bending, kneeling, squatting, and some heavy lifting

  • Maintaining a safe work environment, sample and handle chemical materials, and performing maintenance on laboratory equipment

  • Working directly with plant engineers, operations and maintenance personnel and other lab personnel in a team environment

  • Entering and retrieving computer data

  • Using fire equipment when necessary along with many other general maintenance activities

Position Requirements

Basic/Required:

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country

  • Must be at least 18 years of age

  • Technical certification for Laboratory Technician (or higher) OR 2 years of directly applicable equivalent experience

  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license

  • Willingness to perform/comply with the following:

  • Work a 12-hour rotating shift, which includes some weekends, holidays and nights

  • Work overtime

  • Assume on-call responsibilities

  • Work in enclosed spaces, such as tanks and silos

  • Work near large, hot, high-speed machines

  • Climb up to 250 feet in height

  • Lift a minimum of 50 pounds

  • Work with chemicals, including acids, bases and solvents

  • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection)

  • Maintain your face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)

  • Perform firefighting duties

  • Work outside in harsh weather conditions

  • Work with petroleum products that are under high pressure and high temperatures

  • Able to evacuate in a safe and timely manner in the event of an emergency

  • Able to read at a level to understand written safety procedures, work procedures, work permits, instruction manuals

  • Able to learn computer software associated with process operations

  • Operate standard petroleum laboratory testing instrumentation and test equipment

  • Follow both Standard Laboratory Procedures (SLPs) and American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) procedures

  • Perform minor instrument maintenance

Preferred:

  • Associates degree in Chemistry/Chemical Technology (other Science disciplines considered)

  • 3 or more years of experience as a Laboratory Technician

  • 2 or more years of direct experience working in a refinery and/or chemical industry

  • Knowledge of CFR Engines and willingness to perform minor maintenance

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills

  • Strong oral / written communication skills

  • Ability to work in a team environment

  • Ability to work self-directed

  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills

  • Accepts ownership, is accountable, and delivers on commitments

The Borger Refinery is located in Borger, Texas, in the Texas Panhandle about 50 miles north of Amarillo. The refinery facilities include two fluid catalytic cracking units, alkylation, delayed coking, hydrodesulfurization and naphtha reforming that enable it to produce a high percentage of transportation fuels, such as gasoline, diesel and aviation fuels, as well as petroleum coke, NGL and solvents. Pipelines move refined products to West Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and the Midcontinent region.
