The Advanced Process Control and Optimization (APC&O) Team lead provides advanced process control support to refinery operations and projects and promotes process control strategies from basic regulatory control to multivariable control to multi-unit optimization. The lead is an integral team member in addition to providing work direction, mentoring and assistance to the rest of the APC&O team. The role is also responsible for coordinating advanced process control support for minor/major projects. The APC&O team is part of the site Automation Team which is part of the refinery technical organization.

The APC&O Team Lead is an active member of multiple cross-functional teams and acts as an advocate for best practices in the selection, implementation, and development of the process control systems to ensure that safety, regulatory, production, and optimization objectives are achieved. The APC&O Team Lead is also an active member in the local Process Control Network Committee, the Phillips 66 APC Network, and various other networks.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Develop a vision and strategy for the refinery for advanced process control and optimization.

  • Develop, manage and maintain the APC long range plan.

  • Identify control and optimization opportunities.

  • Prepare and issue quarterly and annual APC progress reports including benchmarking and performance metrics.

  • Perform skills and training analysis and steward training plans for the AC&O team.

  • Identify and support development opportunities for the team.

  • Provide updates to local leadership and corporate networks.

  • Lead the development implementation, design and modeling of new as well as maintenance of existing APC applications (MaxAPC, DMCPlus & DMC3)

  • Support and identify development opportunities for the APC&O engineers

  • Maintain, troubleshoot and support existing advanced controls to maximize performance.

  • Improve refinery process unit operational performance through APC application performance monitoring, tuning and optimization

  • Develop APC safe work practices, maintenance practices and engineering standards where required

  • Mentor and assist development of less experience AC&O engineers

  • Support adopting and sharing APC and other best practices through internal and external networking

  • Day-to-day support for process control related issues that impact unit operation.

  • Provide site support for APC and regulatory controls during off-hours with call out duties as needed.

  • Identify and develop new control applications by utilizing emerging technologies.

  • Review and manage the documentation of system standards, control procedures, DCS architecture and control schemes.

  • Participate in plant improvement teams as needed.

  • Support Alarm Documentation and Rationalization (ARA) activities as needed.

Qualificiations :

Basic/Required :

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical or Electrical Engineering.

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to accurately and clearly communicate both technical and practical information while working in a team environment.

  • Strong commitment to safe work practices.

  • 5+ years of experience in the field of process automation and multivariable process control in refining, petrochemical, manufacturing or a related industry

  • Willing and able to work productively in a diverse team-based environment.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, specifically Word, Excel and Access.

  • Valid driver’s license.

Preferred :

  • Masters or PhD in Chemical or Electrical Engineering with a focus in advanced control.

  • 5+ years of experience with Process Control Systems in a refinery and/or chemical industry supporting Honeywell TDC2000, TDC3000 or Experion DCS.

  • 5+ years of implementing, maintaining and developing DMCplus, MaxAPC, RMPCT or other advanced model-based control applications.

  • Direct experience with unit testing, modeling and commissioning of advanced controls.

  • Experience with OPC configuration and virtual machine development/ configuration.

  • History of identifying and leading advanced control projects.

  • Expert skills with Honeywell Distributed Control System (DCS) programming, troubleshooting and maintaining controllers. Primarily for TDC3000 and Experion platforms.

  • Possess a strong desire to learn, strengthen and build skills, and keep up with process control advances and industry best practices.

  • Experience with Taproot, WHY TREE, or other Root Cause Failure analysis tools.

  • Experience with Machine Learning/AI methodologies and application implementation.

  • Experience with Real Time Optimization applications and implementation.

  • Experience with Alarm Management and Control Performance Monitoring.

  • Professional certification.
