The Unit Mechanical Engineer provides technical support to refinery operations, maintenance and reliability programs.
Responsibilities May Include
From an engineering perspective, support day to day refinery process unit operation and maintenance
Monitor/evaluate equipment performance
Troubleshoot equipment problems
Generate ideas/opportunities for unit optimization
Design projects
Develop cost estimates, procure equipment and follow construction
Provide information and review as needed to Project Engineers for capital project development and project implementation.
Review mechanical designs to ensure compliance with REP’s and company/industry best practices.
Support reliability program in area with strong focus on “bad actor” identification and elimination.
Provide input to turnaround plans & support execution of turnarounds and unit outages
Oversight of construction and turnaround activities
Maintain open and effective communications with process engineering, operations, maintenance and other work groups
Lead/participate in failure analysis of equipment
Participate in process hazard analyses
Ensure management of change (MOC) and compliance
Manage expenses within approved budget limits
Position Requirements
Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field
2 or more years’ experience in Refining, Petrochemical, and/or related field
Willingness and ability to perform/comply with the following:
Wear Nomex fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as hard hat, steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection, fall protection, etc.).
Maintain face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly, being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven
Climbing ladders and accessing elevated areas within refinery process units to survey/evaluate equipment.
Willing and able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC). Information can be found at https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic
Preferred:
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
5 or more years’ experience working as a reliability, rotating or fixed equipment engineer
Experience with the SAP (or other ERP systems) maintenance module
Experience with leading Root Cause Analysis teams
Fixed equipment API certification (510, 570, 653)
Has courage to surface and resolve conflicts in a timely way
Demonstrated written and oral communication skills
Demonstrated ability to work in a team
Demonstrated project management skills
Demonstrated troubleshooting ability
Demonstrated technical knowledge of fixed equipment
Proficient in Microsoft Office tools (i.e. Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Experience with design/engineering software such as Autocad, CadWorx, pipe stress analysis, JADE, etc.
Understands and uses technical expertise to contribute to the success of the business

The Billings Refinery is located in Billings, Montana. Its facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes a mixture of Canadian heavy, high-sulfur crude oil delivered by pipeline, and domestic crude oil delivered by truck. With the startup of a new vacuum distillation unit in 2017, the refinery has 100 percent heavy crude processing capability. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels and petroleum coke. Finished petroleum products are distributed by pipeline, rail car and truck. Pipelines transport most of the refined products to markets in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Colorado and Washington.
