The Process Control Engineer is an advocate of the process control system asset base for the Refinery. Cross-functional advocate for best practices in the selection, implementation, and maintenance of the process control system asset base to ensure that safety, regulatory, production, and optimization objectives are met. The process control system asset base includes all distributed control system (DCS), process control network (PCN), and programmable logic controller (PLC) equipment.

Responsibilities may include :

  • System Administration/Maintenance
  • Providing process control system (PCS) engineering services to troubleshoot, analyze and provide direction to safely resolve control system problems within assigned production areas of a large refinery
  • Responsible for the development, implementation, design, specification and maintenance of PCS (Honeywell) distributed control, process control and shutdown system hardware. Includes implementation of new releases (on/off process migrations) and upgrades
  • Assisting in the development of process control system turnaround work lists for assigned production areas
  • Assisting the maintenance work process to provide technical guidance and documentation based on priority process control system work
  • Responsible for maintaining Smart Plant (SPI) and SAP documentation systems and associated evergreen processes for the process control system asset base across the plant
  • Responsible for the development, implementation and management of process control system safe work practices, maintenance procedures, testing procedures, preventive maintenance plans and engineering standards and specifications
  • Providing support and expertise for design, specification, regulatory control, advanced regulatory control, advanced process control and graphics work on the process control system
  • Responsible for the development, implementation and coordination of process control system reliability improvement efforts, processes and systems, such as: Defect elimination, Event Code Metrics, Predictive/Preventive Maintenance Plans, Patching, Server and associated metrics
  • Responsible for adopting and sharing process control system “best practices” through internal and external networking. Networks/Teams Include: Process Control and Human Centered Technology Network
  • Completing/Assisting Management of Change (MOC’s) related to process control systems
  • Participating in, and provide support for, PHA and LOPA processes
  • Leading or participating in root cause analysis of process control system equipment failures
  • Performing audits and inspections on process control systems
  • Providing support to Controls Modernization and Automation Projects involving process control system specification, hardware and software design, testing, graphics, commissioning, start-up and documentation
  • Providing input and assistance to small and large capital projects from conception to commissioning for process control system design and analysis
  • Assisting in the supervision to contract and company craftsmen on turnarounds and projects
  • Supporting Bad Actor Alarm review processes and provide Alarm Management to supported units to maintain monthly alarm metrics and address standing alarm issues
  • Assisting with training and development of operators, technicians, and engineers in order to improve skill-sets with respect to the process control system asset bas


Basic/Required :

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering
  • Valid driver's license
  • Advanced level of proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • 3 or more years of experience with installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of process control systems and equipment in a petrochemical, manufacturing or related industry
  • 3 or more years of experience with Honeywell Distributed Control System (DCS) programming, troubleshooting and maintenance (Experion and TDC3000 platforms)
  • 3 or more years of experience with acceptance testing and commissioning of process control equipment and systems

Preferred :

  • 3 or more years of experience with field instrumentation hardware installation, design, troubleshooting and maintenance
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Computer/Software Engineering
  • Advanced level of knowledge with Smart Plant Instrumentation (SPI)
  • 3 or more years of experience with SAP
  • Experience with Honeywell Fail Safe Controller (FSC) and Safety Manager (SM)
  • Experience with Allen Bradley and/or Modicon PLCs
  • Experience with Taproot, WHY TREE, or other Root Cause Failure analysis tools
  • Process control systems experience in a refinery and/or chemical industry
  • Strong commitment to safe work practices
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Possess a strong desire to learn, strengthen and build skills, and keep up with process control system technology and industry standards and codes
  • Ability to work productively in a diverse team based environment
  • Strong computer skills
