The Process Safety Engineer is responsible for designing pressure relief devices, disposal systems, and flare systems at the Phillips 66 Research Center (PRC). The engineer will also facilitate Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) reviews and Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA) for laboratories, pilot plants, and hydrocarbon storage facilities at the PRC. Activities include completion of overpressure protection reviews, completion of pressure relief designs, and leading PHA and LOPA studies along with documenting associated reports

Responsibilities may include :

  • Performing all work safely and ethically, complying with company policies and completing HSE and other training requirements
  • Creating pressure relief designs that are safe to install and safe to operate
  • Leading Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) reviews and Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA), including reviews for pilot plants, hydrocarbon storage facilities and laboratory equipment
  • Contacting clients, developing scopes of work (including gathering field information), and designing solutions to meet the needs of the groups supported
  • Applying knowledge of industry and company standards to design activities
  • Acting as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for PHA and Process Safety Information (PSI) elements of the site’s PSM program
  • Working with others in the labs and pilot plants as well as the crafts to implement process safety designs and maintain systems


Basic/Required :

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering
  • 3 or more years of engineering experience with process design, Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA), Process Safety Management (PSM),or a related field
  • 3 or more years of experience demonstrating effective interpersonal skills with the ability to positively interact and establish relationships with internal/external customers, evaluate alternatives and make decisions based on sound business criteria
  • 1 or more years of experience with industry codes and standards
  • Willingness and ability (with or without a reasonable accommodation) to perform/comply with following:
  • Climb ladders and stairs

  • Wear personal protective equipment

  • Work outside in a variety of weather conditions

Preferred :

  • 5 or more years of engineering experience
  • Professional Engineer license or ability to obtain within 1 year
  • Experience in the design of pressure relief and disposal systems per API 520 and 521
  • Experience in leading PHA and LOPA
  • Experience with process simulation and PHA/LOPA software
  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written
  • Motivated self-starter
  • Able to organize and prioritize work and manage several projects simultaneously
  • Proficient (perform skills with limited assistance) in Microsoft Office software
  • Demonstrated pressure relief device design proficiency
  • Ability to learn new skills and take on new responsibilities
